I must say , I read this last night . But, I was at a loss for words! There have been many such destructions in the US! I was praying somehow this area would be different! Stay pristine and fresh as it once was. There is a quote I was told as a young girl, " The Earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the Earth!" I am not sure where it came from? We are such arrogant creatures! When alll of our tree relations are gone then we will be gone too! No one should have to live in this or like this! How many corrections will it take! A recent environmental study showing serious soil contamination in North Douglas has been the local councilor wondering if the entire neighborhood might have to be tested.

Mynarski Counsillor Harry Lazarenko say's he's calling on the City of Winnipeg and the Province's environmental department to take a serious look at test results that show high levels of lead, zinc, copper and other contaminants that exceed commercial and residential human health contact standards.

"There are people in that neighborhood who have been there for years, they have their gardens in their back yards - have they been eating contaminated vegetables?"

Austin Street resident Nana Moore said she didn't know about the contamination but is hoping the government will figure it out soon. "If there's a problem, we deserve to know and we deserve to have it cleaned up. The kids at the school down the road - hopefully it's not a problem."

The soil borehole tests were done about a month ago by Pinchon Environmental at Barber House, the site of the proposed North Point Douglas Community Hub - a $3.2-million project designed to bring essential social services to a neighborhood desperately in need of them.

Lazarenko said it's unknown at this point what the source of the contamination is, but suspects the now -demolished Vulcan Iron Works foundry, now the location of Barber House, may have been a big factor.

"At this point, we don't know. We don't know if this contamination could have spread from there, or if there was illegal dumping at (Barber House), but there shouldn't have been dumping, it is a residential area."

Anita Stenning, the City's CAO, Ursula Stelman, the City's director of community services, and Harry Finnegan, the City's manager of property and development met with Provincal officials last Friday afternoon to determine who was responsible for additional testing.

Chris Hurley, executive assistant to Harry Lazarenko, said while the City most likely will do their share, the concerns also fall within provincial jurisdiction.

Cliff Lee, Red River regional assistant director with Manitoba Conservation said Province was made aware of the potential problem last week and will work with the City to solve it.

"We shouldn't jump to conclusions that the problem is widespread," he said. "We don't know the source of the contamination, and until we do, we won't know what steps we'll have to take."

Lee would not speculate on the Province's role or what would happen in the neighborhood if the contamination is as widespread as feared.

Point Douglas MLA George Hickes said the area will have further testing, although he couldn't confirm who will foot the bill. Phone calls to Barber House were not returned by press deadline.

Sounds like denial to me!And too much money to clean it up! So once again as they always do, it is swept away and covered up! Who are they to decide whos' lives are important and which ones are to be the sacrificial lambs! Corperations listen up! You are defiying the creators law!
